Noted events in his life were:
• Obituary. John C. Harmon was born in Zanesville, Ohio, in 1841 and married Ellen James of Cambridge, Ill., in 1860. Soon afterward he went to California to prospect for gold.
He was successful and started home with his earnings. However, some characters who preferred to get their gold the "easy" way robbed the stage coach and left him with nothing. He turned around and went back to California for more prospecting.
In 1882 he arrived in Cherokee Town, settling the family in the stage house while he searched for a farm to rent. He found one, a 10-year lease for no money-provided he agreed to fence the place, dig a well and improve the house. He was a progressive farmer and found or made enough spare time to haul groceries from Denison, Texas, to help replentish the stocks of the Grant store.
In 1903 Mr. Harmon bought a home in Elmore City, lived there for a time and then moved to his farm north of town. He was a Methodist.
John married Sarah Ellen James. (Sarah Ellen James was born on 7 Apr 1842 in Il, died on 28 Apr 1908 and was buried in Oaklawn Cemetery, Wynnewood, Garvin, OK.)
