Elderly Local Couple Are Fatally Injured
Victims of a fatal automobile-truck collision Saturday night at the intersection of highways 16 and 48, about a mile northeast of Winnsboro, Mr. and Mrs. Issac Albert Sikes were buried here this afternoon.
Funeral services were from the chapel of First National Funeral home, and interment was made in the "New" Winnsboro cemetery. The Rev. Lucius Ladner, pastor of the Pentacostal church at Wisner, officiated at the rites, assisted by the Rev. Oliver S. Taylor.
Victims Enroute Home The accident, which resulted fatally for the couple, was reported to have occurred about midnight Saturday as Mr. and Mrs. Sikes were returning from Chas to their home here.
Mr. Sikes, 62 was killed instantly, and Mrs. Sikes, 67, died about 8 o'clock Sunday morning in a Winnsboro sanitarium.
Truck Going to Crowville Their automobile collided with a large truck and trailer, enroute toward Crowville, which was driven by a negro who escaped injury. The truck-driver, Percy James, was held in custody until Tuesday morning, but charges were not preferred against him.
Details of the crash were not available to the Sun, but both vehicles were badly damaged, the automobile being practically completely demolished. The heavy truck left the highway and went into a ditch at the left side of the road, in the direction in which it was proceeding.
A light about midway the intersection of the two roads was regarded by some as having confused either one or the other, possibly both, of the drivers.
Bodies of the victims were held until this afternoon at the First National Funeral home. Arrival of members of the family was being awaited.
Serving as pallbearers were Matt Herriage, Wm. Goody, Luther Smart, Hilbert Middleton, Howard Middleton, the Rev. Mr. Davis, the Rev. Paul Elder, Archie Wilheight, Lee Burris, Reuben Sikes, Jesse Roberson and Robie Day.
Survivors Are Listed Mr. and Mrs. Sikes are survived by four daughters, Mrs. Myrtis Murray of Dry Prong, mrs. Winnie Day, Hayward, Calif., Miss Winnie Mae Sikes of Winnsboro, and two sons, Floyd Sikes of Hayward, Calif., and Loyd Sikes of Chase.
