• Notes. "Uncle Earl," as he was known, was a three-time governor from 1939 to 1940, 1948 to 1952 and 1956 to 1960. The Winnfield native was also lieutenant governor from 1936-1939. Earl Long is credited with expanding education for all citizens and easing voting restrictions on blacks. He was considered a master of stump speeches.
